reduce your food miles!
80% of the energy used in the U.S. food system is spent on processing, transporting, storing and preparing food. http://attra.ncat.org/farm_energy/food_miles.html

If you think your food is in it's natural, raw...
It was probably irradiated. Irradiating food involves exposing it to ionizing radiation to kill off things like bacteria and bugs. It also kills the food, ie stopping it from sprouting and ripening, and you can say goodbye to the enzymes. Foods that are irradiated include fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, sprout seeds, flour, potatoes. Oh, but don’t worry, all irradiated foods are required...

i would rather have a cockroach in my ear than eat...
yeah, apparently monsanto is slated to release GMO legumes embedded with cholesterol and diabetes drugs… also they are patenting pigs. they are going to own our whole food supply soon. the WORLD’S food supply. so scary. more scary than having a cockroach in your ear. http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_19665.cfm

do you want to be able to light your tap water on...
the correct answer to that question is NO. so very much NO. hydrofracking is not precise! the process wastes oodles of fresh water and risks oodles more when it doesn’t go as planned. all this for a few more years of gas? watch tap water in Pennsylvania ignite read more about this HORRIBLE practice and sign the petition to keep it out of ny state

that’s right people, NYC is the largest consumer of tropical hardwood in north america, and possibly the world (outside of the tropics) http://www.rainforestrelief.org/Campaigns/New_York_City_s_Rainforest_Wood.html

Contrary to popular belief, meat is NOT the number one cause of global warming, feed lots are. Carbon farming takes it back to the old OLD frontier, before the invention of barbed wire and privatization of land. The idea is to use grazing, large hoofed animals to sequester carbon… grass takes in the carbon, animals trample the grass, soil absorbs the carbon from the trampled plant life, new...

very interesting, to say the least
monsanto’s pledge. http://www.monsanto.com/who_we_are/our_pledge/monsanto_pledge.asp yeah. right. (the fact that i am increasing monsanto’s searchability on the interwebz by posting this is sickening)

disappointing
while this is not to say it’s satisfying to me, because people being deceived and unknowingly being exposed to potentially harmful chemicals is not something i revel in, i always said there was something suspect about the sigg liners and for that reason, avoided their bottles. anything that can be accidentally scratched and, as a result, reveal it’s toxic innards is not something i...

first pumpkin ale of the season
as a lover of everything fall and winter, when i saw that pumpkin ale had made it’s debut of the season, i was more than ecstatic. i snatched up a dogfish head punkin and it just might dethrone the running favorite, post road. no joke, i tasted real pumpkin in there people! on a side note, steer clear of shipyard’s pumpkinhead… i am pretty sure it’s bottled pbr.

'certified naturally grown'
when i saw this on a sign attached to a stall at the union square greenmarket today, i was immediately turned off. in general, i am very skeptical of the word NATURAL. it’s plastered all over everything, everywhere and has come to mean absolutely nothing. an empty buzz word. but after talking to the farmer at the evolutionary organics stand, i walked away with pea shoots, garlic and three...

up at 7:03...
i woke up this morning at 7:03 with my head all a flutter about reverend billy’s talk at conflux yesterday. he works a lot with how much the idea and useage of public space has changed. he made a very poignant comment about how times square should really just be attached to jfk airport because it has basically been turned into an extension of the airplane terminal. this got me thinking about...

art not ads →
IMO, most of the time, advertisements are really quite hideous. now you can see art instead, which could potentially also suck. but at least you don’t have to stare at those repeating gifs on weather.com any longer. wait, i actually kind of like those.
